Baidya faction asks govt to sack Minister Bhandari

KATHMANDU, Sept 28: The UCPN (Maoist) faction led by party Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya on Wednesday demanded resignation of Defense Minister Sharat Singh Bhandari for his recent statement that 22 Terai districts would declare themselves independent if the state continues to show apathy to their cause.



In a press release bearing the signatures of Baidya and party General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa, the faction has said the statement has shocked and provoked all patriotic peoples in the country and described the remark as being detrimental to national interests. [break]



It  has also demanded the government´s stance on the issue and asked the government to respect at the same time Madhesi people´s rights to federalism, autonomy and self-determination.



on Monday, speaking at a program in the capital, Minister Bhandari, who also represents Madhesi People´s Rights Forum- Democratic in the government, had also said there was no law in place to stop the Terai districts if they opt to secede from the territory of Nepal.



A day earlier, CPN-UML, in a similar move, had slammed Bhandari´s remark and asked the government to sack him saying that his statement could disturb communal harmony in the country.
