Maharjan will coach his own team, Three Star Club, in the absence of regular coach Meg Raj KC. KC is the assistant coach of the national team which is gearing up for the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers. [break]
After assuming his new role, Maharjan said he was delighted to fulfill his responsibility. “I did not have any active role in football for almost a year so I accepted the coaching role after the club management requested me to handle the club for the tournament.”
Maharjan further added that he had to give up playing football due to injury but he still has not given up the dream to play in the upcoming league.
“This is an opportunity for me to regain my fitness and also to provide my knowledge to the players,” said the new coach, who has been training along with the players.
Maharjan said that his team has a good record in the Budda Subba Gold Cup as they have won the title twice. Maharjan himself was the highest scorer in one of the editions. “Though I am under a lot of pressure in my new role, I am sure that we will bring good results.”
Maharjan was the first product of the ANFA Academy and had shot into fame as an influential midfielder in Nepal. But his career was marred by injury after his right leg fractured during the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup. He had scored five goals in the first edition of the Challenge Cup in 2005 but has not been called in national team after his injury.
