The latest incident erupted at around 9:45 pm and escalated into arson and vandalism, injuring eight detainees and 20 police personnel and rendering the facility uninhabitable. Authorities said the unrest once again highlighted the risks of housing adult offenders alongside younger juveniles.

All detainees relocated from the Sanothimi Juvenile Correction Centre in Bhaktapur after clashes between rival gangs sparked arson and vandalism. 

The Election Commission reported that a total of 3,481 candidacies were registered under the first-past-the-post electoral system by late Tuesday evening.

The Nepali Congress, under new president Gagan Thapa, has sidelined several senior leaders in ticket distribution for the March 5 elections, signalling a decisive generational shift toward younger leadership.

The EC formally recognized Gagan Thapa as NC president, ending weeks of internal turmoil and handing the Thapa-led faction control of the party’s symbol, office and leadership amid protests and rival claims.

Leaders familiar with the developments said the two sides are likely to strike a deal and avert an imminent party split if they can agree on the role and position Deuba should hold until the regular general convention scheduled for May.

The initiative is aimed at easing tensions and preventing a formal rupture.
