KATHMANDU, June 9: In a move aimed at strengthening domestic production and supporting local farmers, the government has launched a fresh push to promote products of the state-owned Dairy Development Corporation (DDC), positioning them as a matter of national pride.
The initiative gained momentum during a recent Cabinet meeting, where ministers held detailed discussions on expanding the market reach of DDC products and encouraging their wider use across government agencies and public institutions.
The proposal was tabled by Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Gita Chaudhary, who stressed the need to reinforce Nepal’s dairy sector by boosting the visibility and consumption of domestically produced dairy products.

According to Minister Chaudhary, a stronger DDC would not only help safeguard the interests of thousands of dairy farmers but also enhance the corporation’s commercial viability. She underscored the importance of improving coordination among government agencies to make the corporation more competitive, quality-focused and financially self-reliant.
The minister also highlighted the need to ensure reliable milk procurement and stable market access for farmers, arguing that sustained institutional support is essential for the long-term growth of Nepal’s dairy industry.
As part of the promotional campaign, Chaudhary distributed packaged DDC products to Prime Minister Balen Shah and fellow Cabinet members during the meeting, symbolically showcasing the range of products produced by the state-owned enterprise.
Prime Minister Shah expressed support for the initiative, encouraging the consumption and promotion of domestic dairy products. His backing was viewed as a message in favour of strengthening local production, supporting Nepali farmers and reducing dependence on imported goods.
The government's renewed focus on DDC comes at a time when policymakers are increasingly looking for ways to bolster domestic industries, create value chains that benefit local producers and foster greater confidence in homegrown brands. By placing DDC products at the centre of its "Buy Nepali" narrative, the government hopes to turn a household dairy brand into a symbol of economic self-reliance and national pride.
