KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Leaders aligned with former President Sher Bahadur Deuba-led former Nepali Congress (NC) on Sunday filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court (SC), challenging the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to recognize the executive committee elected by the party’s Special General Convention.

The move follows a conclusion reached at a meeting of the now-dissolved Central Working Committee of the Deuba faction held in Sanepa on Saturday under the leadership of former acting party president Purna Bahadur Khadka.

Leader Min Bahadur Bishwakarma, spokesperson of Deuba faction talking to media from EC premise confirmed that the group had approached the apex court, seeking annulment of the EC’s decision.

Senior leaders including Prakash Man Singh and Bimalendra Nidhi were also present at the court.

Meanwhile, the court sources said that the hearing of the case won’t begin today. Since tomorrow is a Public holiday for Sonam Lotschar, the hearing will likely begin on only Tuesday on January 20. Interestingly, January 20 is the day where political parties need to submit their candidates for the March 5 election at EC.
