LALITPUR, Sept 23: Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Mahabir Pun and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming visited the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) in Khumaltar to observe the work being carried out by Chinese DNA and forensic identification experts.
They expressed gratitude to the expert team assisting with DNA testing to identify those who died or went missing in the Rasuwa flood and provide information to their families.
During the inspection, Minister Pun suggested providing support and assistance to families affected by the disaster and making DNA and forensic testing more effective.
“DNA testing is a very important way to inform families who have lost their relatives and loved ones about the condition of those who are missing or have died. I want to thank the experts involved in the testing for their hard work,” he said.

He also urged the experts to expedite DNA testing to identify those who died or went missing in the floods and other disasters.
Minister Pun said the safe transportation of samples from collection points to laboratories is a sensitive process and that only a limited number of samples have been received so far. He said efforts would be made to provide results as quickly as possible.
He said the Nepal Police's DNA testing laboratory has a large capacity, while the capacity of other police and national forensic laboratories is relatively limited.
Chinese Ambassador Zhang praised the work of Chinese experts involved in post-disaster rescue, relief and victim identification in Nepal, saying that China would continue to provide all possible support to help Nepal overcome the challenges.
Thanking the Chinese experts who have been working in Nepal for more than three weeks, Ambassador Zhang expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, NAST and other relevant Nepali agencies for supporting and facilitating their work.
He also expressed special thanks for the support provided to establish a laboratory for the Chinese experts, which he said would help reduce the impacts of the disaster and support rescue efforts. Chinese forensic experts are working with Nepali teams to conduct DNA testing and victim identification.
