Police arrested Dr. Sudhir Rajbhandari on Tuesday for allegedly threatening a score of Nepal Medical Council (NMC) members through SMS. Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) said that Dr. Bhandari, who is undergoing a treatment for depression, had pestered at least 20 NMC executive committee members with threatening texts for over two weeks.[break]
Dr. Rajbhandari, of Samakhusi, had earned his MD degree from Evano State Medical Academy in Russia in 2004. Ever since he returned home, he continuously appeared for the NMC-run licensing exams but to no avail.
He told the media that the existing examinations system was one of the reasons behind his failure and that he was frustrated at the NMC officials who ignored his attempts to draw their attention for changes.
According to MPCD, the doctor sent the texts using a SIM-card he bought using a photocopy of the citizenship certificate of an unkown person he found at a grocery store.
The MPCD team arrested him from his home. Clad in a well-pressed cotton pant and a silk jacket, he initially refused to talk to the press without his advocate. Later he said he defended the ´rationale´ behind protesting the NMC´s exams.
“There are a lot of victims like me,” he said. “I landed in police net due to certain circumstances.”
MPCD officials said that Dr. Rajbhandari might be spared the trouble of getting litigated on the charges of kidnapping and hostage attempt owing to his ´mental health issues´.
NMC members had collectively complained to the Police Headquarters after they received threatening texts in the name of ´Anti-NMC Force´.
