KATHMANDU, March 14: The fifth cycle of Galleria CUC’s exhibition ‘Elements’ opened on Sunday and features photographs by Sneha Shrestha, Gaurav Dhwaj Khadka, Nikhil Gurung, Shikhar Bhattarai and Prajwal Bhattarai, who represent sky, fire, earth, water and metal, respectively.

“The photographs of the five elements portray the combination of spiritual and physical experiences,” says Dhurba Raj Regmi, secretary of Nepal National Commission for UNESCO, inaugurating the exhibition. [break]

“We have already organized four exhibitions, and this is the fifth,” said Swapnil Acharya, curator of Galleria CUC, adding, “In the last four exhibitions we decided the theme but this time the photographers chose the theme themselves.”

“The five elements are portrayed independently in the photos but at the same time the photos show interdependence among the elements,” he said, adding, “This exhibition is a creative documentation of the artistic works of the five photographers.”

Regmi distributed certificates to the participating photographers of ‘UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Nepal 2011 Wall Calendar’, which was published by Galleria CUC in January this year, as well as to the participating photographers of ‘World Heritage in SAARC Nations’, a photo exhibition organized in December 2009.

The participating Nepali photographers of ‘The Dream of patterns- Asian Cosmos Photo Exhibition,’ a photo exhibition about the persistent patterns in the daily lives of people in Asia held in Seoul, Korea, in January, were presented with the book ‘Asian Cosmos Auspicious Patterns of Asia’.

Tokens of appreciation were also distributed to the volunteers of ‘The Taste of Coffee’, an exhibition of photo, art and sound.

Hari Bangsha Kirat, president of Galleria CUC, said, “The young photographers participating in the exhibition are very enthusiastic and creative,” adding, “They have depicted the tangible and intangible aspects of our culture through their lens.”

“Photography is the most powerful medium of expression, and indeed a picture speaks a thousand words,” said KB Limbu, managing director of Nepal Airlines Corporation and a veteran photographer.

“The trend of photography is changing and becoming more contemporary and artistic,” he added.

The photographs are on display till April 30 at Galleria CUC, Momomagic, Pulchowk
