KATHMANDU, June 10: Around 2.5 million farmers have been enrolled in the Farmer Registration System under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

The farmers were registered based on details of their landholdings and production. Sanjeev Pandit, an officer at the Agriculture Information Centre, said farmers were enlisted through an online system with the objective of providing necessary subsidies and facilities to boost production.

He said efforts were underway to register the remaining 1.6 million farmers, as the Agriculture Census 2021 shows that there are 4.13 million farmers in the country.

After all farmers are registered, the ministry plans to classify them into four categories—subsistence farmers, small farmers, medium farmers and large farmers, Pandit said. He added that farmer identity cards would be distributed and that farmers would be connected to a digital information system following the classification.

The identity cards would make it easier for the government to provide various facilities, including grants, chemical fertilizers, seeds and other support services.

Information and details of farmers have been collected in coordination with local governments across the country.

The centre has also urged farmers who have not yet registered to enroll in the programme.
