CHITWAN, July 30: The Nepali Congress (NC) parliamentary party in Bagmati Province has decided to seek support from other parties to retain Chief Minister Indra Bahadur Baniya after the CPN-UML withdrew its backing from the provincial government.
A meeting of the NC parliamentary party on Thursday decided to initiate both written and verbal consultations with all parties represented in the provincial assembly to secure support for the NC-led government.
The meeting authorized Chief Minister Baniya, who also heads the NC parliamentary party in the province, to lead the outreach efforts in coordination with the party’s central leadership.
Baniya elected President of NC Bagmati Province Committee
The move follows the UML’s decision to withdraw its support for the NC-led government and pull its ministers out of the provincial cabinet. The UML and the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) have agreed to cooperate in Bagmati Province, but the two parties do not have enough seats to form a majority on their own.
The NC parliamentary party also passed a condolence motion on the death of senior party leader and former deputy prime minister Gopal Man Shrestha, who died while undergoing treatment at Helpers Hospital in Lalitpur.
The meeting also expressed concern over the recent violence in Dewanganj-Kaptanganj of Sunsari district and urged all sides to exercise restraint to preserve religious and social harmony.
It further called on the Bagmati provincial government to coordinate with the federal government to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
