JANAKPURDHAM, June 24: Birgunj Metropolitan City has announced a budget of Rs 4.42 billion for the fiscal year 2026/27, with priorities including education, healthcare, sanitation, agriculture, tourism, industry, quality infrastructure and technology.
The budget was presented during the metropolitan city's 20th Municipal Assembly by Executive Member Jagat Sah Kanu on behalf of Acting Mayor Imtiaz Alam.
The proposed budget totals Rs 4.42 billion, representing an increase of nearly Rs 1.19 billion compared to the current fiscal year's budget of Rs 3.22 billion.
What is missing in budget for agriculture?
Of the total allocation, Rs 2.40 billion (54.3 percent) has been earmarked for recurrent expenditure, while Rs 1.97 billion (44.6 percent) has been allocated for capital spending. An additional Rs 50 million (1.1 percent) has been set aside for financial management.
To finance the proposed expenditure, the metropolitan city expects to receive Rs 1.98 billion through federal fiscal transfers and generate Rs 1.48 billion from internal revenue sources. Other projected sources include Rs 246.9 million from federal revenue sharing, Rs 50 million from provincial fiscal transfers, Rs 16.7 million from provincial revenue sharing, Rs 450 million from land and property registration fees, Rs 46.9 million in cash reserves carried over from the previous fiscal year, and Rs 150 million from the Town Development Fund.
Municipal officials said the budget is designed to strengthen service delivery and accelerate infrastructure development while supporting key social and economic sectors across the metropolitan city.
