“The government hasn't provided us money to rebuild our homes destroyed by the quake. On top of that the administration has taken away our lands. We cannot live in makeshift shelters forver,” said one of the locals.
About 60,000 ropanis of land spread across 13 VDCs of Gorkha and several VDCs in Dhading will be affected by the hydropower project. The government has already stopped buying and selling of land in those VDCs. Locals complained that lack of proper information about the project has created lots of confusion among them.
“The government has stopped us from buying and selling the land. We have no idea when will the government provide us compensations for the land and how much will we get. The administration should clarify these issues at the earliest,” said Rishi Prashad Badu, a local of Aarughat VDC.
The DAO had issued a notice two weeks ago to prevent land transactions in 14 VDCs. Locals personally met the CDO and requested him to clarify about the government plans for the people of the affected areas.
“We are financially weak. The government should provide us a place to live and livelihoods. Then we too can help the government in implementing the hydropower project,” said Bal Bahadur Kumal, a local of Borlang-8.
CDO Bhatta said the government wants to expedite the project work and at the same time help the affected locals. “We would form sub-committees at the village level for determining compensations for the project-affected people,” he said.
