KATHMANDU, Oct 30: The effects of Cyclone Arnab, which developed in the Bay of Bengal, have begun to be felt across Nepal, with partial influence from westerly winds also affecting the country since Thursday.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), the weather is generally cloudy across the country today. Light rain has been reported in some hilly areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces and parts of the Terai, including Madhesh Province.

This afternoon, most parts of the country are expected to remain cloudy. Several places in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, as well as most hilly areas of Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces, are likely to receive moderate rain and snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Some places in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, along with a few hilly and mountainous areas of Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces, may experience heavy rain and snowfall. Strong winds are also possible in some parts of the Terai in Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

Similar weather conditions are expected tonight, with most parts of the country likely to remain cloudy and receive moderate rain and snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Some areas may experience heavy precipitation, according to the DHM.

The DHM has warned that moderate rain and snowfall with thunderstorms are likely across much of the country today and tomorrow. Some places in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces may receive heavy rainfall, while one or two places could experience very heavy rain and snowfall. Some hilly and mountainous areas of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces may also receive heavy precipitation.

In view of the forecast, the DHM has advised people to avoid agricultural activities, including rice harvesting, today and tomorrow.

It has also urged caution in high hilly and mountainous areas due to the risks of heavy snowfall, snowstorms and landslides, advising tourists not to travel to high-altitude areas. Those already in such areas have been asked to remain in safe locations until weather conditions improve.

The expected rainfall could bring colder temperatures, trigger landslides in vulnerable areas and along roads, and disrupt road and air transport as well as daily life.
