Don’t worry, be happy

KATHMANDU, July 7: It's inevitable that we face criticism in our professional life one time or another. It could be because of our tardiness, our careless mistakes, relationships with colleagues or our attitude to work in general. Our supervisors or seniors are bound to have a few words to say about our mistakes and we obviously feel slighted. But before we bristle and fume, let us consider why constructive criticism may actually be good for us and how we should deal with it.

First of all, pause that reaction

Our immediate reaction to hearing something critical about ourselves is to go on the defensive. For example, your boss might reject your work citing some mistake but you might only remember the hard work you put in and start arguing right away. When you feel that familiar hot rush bubbling inside you, take a second to calm yourself down. Listen to your boss and let her words sink in. She might have something smart to say that you can use to not make the same mistake again. Plus, your boss will obviously feel annoyed that you're getting flustered over a mistake you made, so it's a smarter move to keep quiet.Listen with an open mind

This means you need to be open to constructive criticism, take it to heart, and learn from it. And seeing you handle criticism well proves to your boss that you are mature and positive. The feedbacks then will become more positive and constructive thus enabling you to be a better professional. We need good advice and constructive criticism to grow and be the best version of ourselves. But at the same time, if you really feel it's just negative and not helpful at all, then ask your boss to explain herself more clearly.

Ask questions

When your supervisor is explaining where you went wrong, listen with care and ask questions that will give you a clear idea about the feedback. If she says you've not been very good with team work recently then ask her why she feels that way. She might give you some concrete examples like you not listening to your team members, not doing your share of the work, etc. You can also ask her to give you suggestions on how you can improve.

Apologize

A good way to diffuse any tension is to apologize for whatever mistake you've made. Don't hold grudges. You are there to work and give your best. Take every lesson as an opportunity to learn. Your facial expressions and body language also count. So don't frown or clench your palms or fold your arms tightly.

Go about fixing the problem

As soon as your mistakes are pointed out to you, you should try and set it right. Clear the air with your colleagues if you've been having problems with them. Analyze all the things your boss or supervisor has said to you. If it's your unpunctuality that's the issue then try little things like setting your watch 15 minutes early or leaving for work 10 minutes earlier than usual.
