KATHMANDU, Aug 31: A five-year-old girl who remained buried under flood debris in Timure, Rasuwa, for three days has been rescued alive and is undergoing treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu.
Manisha Uchaimagar was swept away along with her house by the Bhotekoshi flood on Wednesday morning. Her father, Lok Bahadur, rushed home after witnessing the flood, but the current carried away his daughter and their house. He survived by fleeing to safety, while Manisha’s mother, Geeta, escaped from her workplace.

The family searched desperately for two days, visiting rescue centres and sites where bodies had been recovered. Losing hope, they began travelling toward Kathmandu on Friday afternoon. Later that day, Armed Police Force personnel combing the Timure riverbed heard faint cries. Following the sound, they discovered Manisha buried under mud, her head trapped against an iron rod. The team carefully freed her.
Initially unable to speak, Manisha’s identity was confirmed the next morning when a Dhunche-based bank employee contacted her mother with a photograph of the rescued child. She was brought to Kathmandu on Saturday for further treatment. At Teaching Hospital, she recognised her parents but has yet to speak normally.
Doctors have diagnosed her with psychological trauma and pneumonia. Her mother said Manisha has spoken very little, only expressing hunger. Medical staff have advised the family not to discuss the flood with her due to the trauma she endured.
Her parents expressed immense relief at seeing their daughter alive four days after she was swept away. They thanked the Armed Police Force personnel who searched through mud and debris to rescue her, adding that they remain hopeful of her full recovery.
