KATHMANDU, Oct 4: Former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has called on political parties to compete in developing and implementing a clear, long-term plan to transform Nepal into a developed country.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Nepali Congress’s 15th General Convention on Sunday, Bhattarai said Nepal should formulate a common development plan with the goal of reaching developed-country status within the next 20 years.
Citing Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore and China as examples of countries that made rapid progress within a relatively short period, he said Nepal should also adopt a long-term development strategy.
Is The Future of Nepali Political Parties Doomed?
“Let’s think about how we can reach that level within the next 20 years, as Malaysia, Korea, Singapore and China moved from the Global South to the Global North within our own lifetimes,” he said.
Bhattarai said political parties should compete over how best to implement a common national development plan.
“Let’s prepare a plan and let all parties compete over how to implement it. Only then can the country develop,” he said.
He also stressed the need to trust the younger generation to ensure political stability.
“Let’s learn from the past. Now we must trust the new generation,” he said.
