BIRGUNJ, April 19: If all goes well, Birgung will get a Modern Waste Management Centre (MWMC) in the next two years. Waste related problems would be resolved to a large extent after the center is established, according to Birgunj Sub-Metropolitan City office. Shailendra Shrestha, the head of the MWMC project, said that the World Bank has provided 89 percent of the total cost of setting up the center. The center, which also has the support of Asian Development Bank, will be set up at Nagwa village.

Chief District Officer (CDO) Keshavraj Ghimire said, "Birgunj shall set an example for the entire country after this venture is successfully completed."

Shrestha said 15 bigha, 17 kattha and 19 dhur of land has been set aside for the center and the plant would be built at a cost of about Rs 47 crores, 61 lakhs and 80 thousand rupees.

The contract to build the facility has been awarded to China's ZIEC.

The MWMC is expected to generate Rs 62 million per year through waste recycling, as per a consultant for the project.

The project would turn biodegradable waste into compost, sell plastic and metals, and treat other types of garbage as per the need.

As per a rough estimation, the center could receive seven tons of compostable waste, four tons of recyclable waste, and 25 tons of other types of waste everyday.
