KATHMANDU, Nov 1: Gen Z leader Ravi Kiran Hamal has called for the formation of a powerful, independent citizens’ commission, or ombudsman, to conduct an impartial and comprehensive investigation into the Inam Sapkota case.

In a press statement issued on Sunday on behalf of Gen Z Movement Nepal, Hamal said the investigation should examine possible connections, coordination, financial transactions, undue influence and abuse of power involving individuals across the judiciary and executive.

He expressed concern that details emerging about the case and the investigation were being made public in a one-sided manner. He said the inquiry should not be limited to any single individual or institution.

Hamal said lawmakers, ministers, officials at the Prime Minister’s Office and other executive officials should also come under investigation when questions arise about members of the judiciary. He stressed that investigators should not determine the scope of the inquiry based on a person’s position, influence or political power.

He called for a commission comprising impartial and respected individuals with high ethical standards, backed by broad legal powers and institutional independence. The commission should have the authority to obtain documents and records, summon individuals, collect evidence and recommend legal action where necessary, he said.

“The state must undergo institutional cleansing. That is why the Gen Z movement took place,” Hamal said in the statement.

He also stressed that all accused individuals must receive a fair hearing and that anyone found guilty based on evidence should face legal action.

Hamal said changing the government or political leadership alone would not amount to meaningful change. He called for structural reforms in the way the state operates and ensures accountability
