Govt estimates Rs 12 billion to rebuild roads damaged by floods, landslides

The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has projected over Rs 10 billion for rebuilding main highways, alternative roads, Bailey bridges and permanent bridges affected by this year’s monsoon-related disasters.

KATHMANDU, Oct 8: The reconstruction of roads damaged by this week’s floods and landslides is estimated to cost over Rs 12 billion. 



The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has projected over Rs 10 billion for rebuilding main highways, alternative roads, Bailey bridges and permanent bridges affected by this year’s monsoon-related disasters.

A remaining Rs 1.7 billion is allocated for the reconstruction of structures damaged in last year’s disasters. Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development Kulman Ghising stated that clearing and restoring blocked roads is a high priority, and subordinate agencies are actively working on it.


Minister Ghising noted that equipment and manpower have been deployed for quick restoration, and he and the ministry are conducting monitoring. The Mechi Highway suffered the most damage this year, with reconstruction estimated at Rs 1.5 billion. Other highways, including Koshi, Mid-Hill, Hulaki, Araniko, Kanti, and Narayanghat–Mugling, are estimated to require nearly Rs 3.77 billion for reconstruction.


Additionally, rebuilding 17 damaged permanent bridges is projected to cost Rs 4.52 billion, constructing new Bailey bridges for damaged roads Rs 800 million, and reconstructing alternative roads Rs 1.59 billion.
