KATHMANDU, Nov 6: The government plans to strengthen the implementation of its multisectoral action plan to prevent and control non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and accelerate reforms in the public health sector.
As part of this effort, a meeting was held on Tuesday at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar to discuss the current state of NCDs. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s health adviser and concluded that long-term prevention efforts should focus on promoting healthier lifestyles.
The meeting decided to hold consultations with all ministries to ensure effective implementation of the multisectoral action plan and conduct regular review meetings to monitor progress.

Participants discussed raising public awareness about healthy lifestyles, coordinating with local governments to control NCDs, introducing public health education from the school level and retaining specialist doctors in the country.
The meeting also identified tobacco products, energy drinks, junk food, pesticide-contaminated food and unhealthy lifestyles as major risk factors for NCDs. Participants stressed the need for effective measures to control and regulate these factors.
For the current fiscal year 2026/27, the government has adopted a strategy to address cancer and other NCDs through prevention, public awareness, regular screening and healthy lifestyle promotion, rather than relying solely on treatment.
Nepal has also committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing premature deaths from NCDs by one-third by 2030.
