KATHMANDU, April 3: The drivers working for the Kathmandu Metropolitan City's environment department tussled over the issue of their promotion on Sunday.

There are around 180 drivers hired for carrying waste from the city's streets to Sisdole landfill site.A total of 29 drivers were recently promoted to the fifth level from fourth.

Other 64 drivers came to the office of the KMC on Sunday and demanded that they, too, be given promotion. "The twenty-nine drivers who were promoted recently were appointed only 10 years ago. But the 64 of us, who were appointed 21 years ago, have been deprived of promotion," they said.

The 64 drivers threatened to stop carrying wastes from streets if their demands were not met. "We will wait for a few days. Then we will either take the matter to the court or halt the delivery of the waste completely," one of the protesting drivers said.

Indra Man Tamang, executive chief of the KMC, refused to discuss the issue and asked Republica to get in touch with KMC Spokesperson Gyanendra Karki. When Karki was approached for comment, he declined, too, and pointed to the Environment Department.

"The protesting drivers have sought higher salaries and benefits than the newly promoted drivers. The demand will be considered as per the court verdict," said Rabin Man Shrestha, chief of KMC's environment department.
