KATHMANDU, June 18: Senior leader of the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) and former Speaker of House of Representatives (HoR) Krishna Bahadur Mahara has announced his decision to step away from active politics, citing serious health complications.
Issuing a statement on the occasion of his 70th birthday, Mahara said he will no longer hold active responsibility in the party and will remain only as a general member.
He has been suffering from a long-term neurological and muscular condition (atrophy), which has significantly affected his ability to participate in regular political activities. Despite continuous treatment, medication, and therapy, his health has not shown sufficient improvement.
China congratulated Speaker Mahara
“In view of my health condition, I have found it difficult to remain actively, effectively, and responsibly engaged in party duties,” Mahara stated. “With deep emotional difficulty, I have decided to step away from active political responsibility from today.”
He clarified that his decision is not linked to any political disagreement, ideological shift, or dissatisfaction within the party, but is purely due to health-related limitations.
Mahara reaffirmed his continued commitment to the party’s ideological direction and national issues, saying he will remain loyal to the broader political movement and national sovereignty concerns.
Reflecting on his nearly five-decade-long political journey, he noted his involvement in multiple phases of Nepal’s leftist movement, including CPN (Fourth Convention), Mashal, Unity Centre, Maoist movement, and the present Nepali Communist Party. He expressed gratitude to colleagues, supporters, and the public for their long-standing support.
He also expressed confidence that the younger generation will carry forward the responsibility of building a prosperous and self-reliant Nepal, stating that their success would give meaning to past political struggles.
