KATHMANDU, Oct 3: Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has said the dam of the Kulekhani Hydropower Project in Makwanpur is safe and its condition is normal.

Minister Shrestha inspected the dam on Saturday to assess its condition after heavy rainfall from September 24 to 28 caused the water level in the reservoir to cross the danger mark.

Officials from the Nepal Electricity Authority briefed him on the condition of the dam and reservoir. Shrestha said the authorities had maintained round-the-clock surveillance and taken necessary measures to manage the water level and alert downstream areas.

“The dam is stable now,” he said.

The heavy rains had raised the reservoir to the alert level, creating concerns over the dam and pressure on electricity supply management. Shrestha said the current water level would also help ease power management during the dry season.

NEA Managing Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha said Kulekhani plays a crucial role in the national power system, particularly for meeting peak demand, and confirmed that the dam remains in normal condition.
