Less rain, higher temperatures expected this winter across Nepal

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has forecast below-average rainfall across most parts of Nepal from December 1 to February 28. At the same time, maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain above average.

KATHMANDU, Dec 4: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has forecast below-average rainfall across most parts of Nepal from December 1 to February 28. At the same time, maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain above average.



According to DHM, different provinces may experience varying rainfall patterns. Northern areas of Sudurpaschim and Karnali, as well as northwestern parts of Gandaki Province, may see below-average, average or above-average rainfall with roughly equal probability. The probability of below-average rainfall in eastern and southern Sudurpaschim, southern Karnali, western Lumbini, southern Bagmati, northern Madhesh, and central-eastern Koshi is 55–65 percent. Central parts of Sudurpaschim and Karnali, central and eastern Lumbini, eastern Gandaki, central and northern Bagmati, southern Madhesh, and some parts of Koshi have a 45–55 percent chance, while the remaining areas have a 35–45 percent chance of below-average rainfall.

Maximum Temperatures: Most regions are expected to experience above-average maximum temperatures. Northern and southern Gandaki, southern Bagmati, and northern and southwestern Koshi have a 55–65 percent chance of above-average maximum temperatures. Northern Karnali, northern Lumbini, and other parts of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki have a 44–55 percent chance, while southwestern Sudurpaschim, southwestern Karnali, and western Lumbini have a 35–45 percent chance. Southern Lumbini and Madhesh may see equal chances of below, average, or above-average maximum temperatures.


Minimum Temperatures: Across the country, minimum temperatures are also likely to remain above average. Northern and southwestern Sudurpaschim, central and northern Karnali, most of Lumbini, northeastern and southwestern Bagmati, most of Madhesh, and northern and southern Koshi have a 55–65 percent chance of above-average minimum temperatures. The rest of the country has a 35–55 percent chance.
