BHARDAH, Aug 20: Top leaders of agitating Madhes-based parties reached Bhardaha of Saptari district Thursday where a person died in clash with police Tuesday during the protest, and called for peaceful protest.

Federal Socialist Forum Nepal (FSFN) Chairman Upendra Yadav, Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) Chief Mahantha Thakur, Sadbhavana Party Chair Rajendra Mahato and Federal Sadbhavana Party Chairman Anil Jha reached Bhardaha to address the funeral procession of the deceased, Rajiv Raut. The procession was scheduled for Thursday but it has been postponed to Friday due to rain. Following the postponement, the leaders addressed local reporters and accused the state of using excessive force to suppress the protests.

"Police have crossed the limit and used excessive force in Bhardaha to supress the uprising of Madhesi people. But we will continue with peaceful demonstrations," said Yadav. "The first Madhes uprising was for a Madhes province from Jhapa to Kanchanpur and the current uprising will not stop until we achieve that," he added.

TMDP Chairman Thakur said the protests will continue until the major political parties agree to fulfill the agreements reached with Madhes-based parties.

"We are not begging for a province, autonomous Madhes Province is the right of Madhesi people," said Sadbhavana Party chief Mahato.

Talking to reporters, FSP Chairman Anil Jha said the top Madhesi leaders have left Kathmandu to focus on protests. "We will keep fighting for our rights and it is the duty of the state to fulfill our demands," said Jha.

Before speaking to the reporters, all the leaders met the family members of Rajiv Raut and vowed to support the family.
