KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Project Implementation Directorate (PID), the authority responsible for implementing the Melamchi Water Supply Project, has said around 40 percent of work of installing pipelines to supply drinking water from Melamchi to Kathmandu has been completed.

Starting from Sundarijal reservoir, which would receive water from Melamchi through a tunnel, the drinking water would be supplied through a network of pipelines.Of the total 750km pipeline network, 288km has already been installed in the Kathmandu valley, the PID statement read.

Likewise, the construction of six reservoirs at various places in the valley to store the water supplied from Sundarijal is also gathering pace, as per the PID statement.

The reservoirs are being constructed at Arubari, Mahankalchaur, Bansbari, Balaju, Maharajgunj-Panipokhari of Kathmandu and Khumaltar of Lalitpur.

The reservoirs have a combined capacity to store 22 percent of the water that flows to Sundarijal from Melamchi on a daily basis, according to officials.

As per the revised plan, Melamchi Drinking Water Project targets to bring the water to Kathmandu by mid-April 2016.

Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited, the body responsible for supplying drinking water in Kathmandu, has the capacity to supply only 90 million liters of water to the Kathmanduties in dry season and 150 million liters of water during rainy season, far below the demand.

Therefore, the KUKL is also looking for other sources of water as Melamchi project would supply only 170 million liters of water every day, which is only half of the total requirement.

The Melamchi project was started in 2000 with an aim to supply 170 million liter of water per day to the valley by 2007. The slow pace of the project, however, has resulted in two deadline extensions, with the first one aiming to complete the project by 2013 and the current deadline set for 2016. The total cost of the project is US $ 249.4 million.
