KATHMANDU, Oct 31: Nepal imported 6,636 electric vehicles (EVs) worth Rs 15.03 billion during the first three months of the fiscal year 2026/27, with imports rising sharply ahead of the festive season.

The government collected Rs 9.06 billion in customs revenue from EV imports during the three-month period.

China remained Nepal’s largest EV supplier, accounting for 4,820 units worth Rs 11.10 billion. India supplied 1,420 units worth Rs 2.80 billion, while Thailand exported 393 units valued at Rs 1.12 billion. Two EVs worth Rs 7.8 million were imported from the USA.

Disruptions at major northern border crossings have been affecting trade with China via land route. With the Tatopani–Khasa crossing remaining non-operational and the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border closed following the August 26 Bhotekoshi–Trishuli floods, traders have been using the Korala border point in Mustang to bring goods into Nepal.
