KATHMANDU, Nov 8: The matches played so far in the third edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) have made the competition increasingly competitive and exciting.
Defending champions Lumbini Lions have suffered their first defeat, while Kathmandu Gorkhas, who lost their opening match, have bounced back with three consecutive victories and are emerging as title contenders.
With the 18th match of the tournament concluded on Saturday, the competition will take a one day break today (Sunday). Since the tournament began on Kartik 10, the results have shown that no team has an easy path to the title.
While some sides have maintained consistency, others have struggled to meet expectations in their opening matches.
On Saturday, Kathmandu Gorkhas defeated defending champions Lumbini Lions by 36 runs to register their third victory of the tournament. Kathmandu scored 160 for eight in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Lumbini were bowled out for 124 in 19.3 overs.
Australian batter David Warner led Kathmandu’s batting effort with 66 runs off 50 balls. He shared a 104 run opening partnership with Sahil Patel. Warner struck nine fours and one six. With the ball, Jahandad Khan took four wickets for 23 runs, while captain Karan KC claimed two wickets.
For Lumbini, Sandeep Jora was the top scorer with 44 runs, but he received little support from the other batters.
Lumbini lost six wickets for just 28 runs during the powerplay. That poor start proved to be the main reason for their defeat.
Brazil wins in Berlin to end Germany's unbeaten run
The victory marked Kathmandu’s third consecutive win in the competition. After losing their opening match against Janakpur Bolts, Kathmandu defeated Karnali Yaks, Biratnagar Kings and Lumbini in succession. Their victory over Lumbini has further boosted the team's confidence.
For Lumbini, the defeat carries particular significance. The defending champions had remained unbeaten in their opening matches this season, extending a winning streak from the final stages of the previous edition.
Kathmandu brought their 11-match unbeaten run to an end. Despite the loss, Lumbini remain at the top of the points table with seven points.
Based on performances so far, Kathmandu Gorkhas and Sudurpaschim Royals have emerged as strong contenders in the title race. Both teams have six points. Kathmandu occupies second place, while Sudurpaschim is third on net run rate. Chitwan Rhinos, with five points, also remain in contention. Janakpur Bolts, Karnali Yaks and Biratnagar Kings have collected four points each. Pokhara Avengers, meanwhile, are still searching for their first victory.
Lumbini began their title defence by defeating Sudurpaschim by seven wickets in the opening match of the tournament. Chitwan Rhinos beat Biratnagar Kings by eight runs, while Karnali Yaks defeated Janakpur Bolts by one wicket. Sudurpaschim then beat Pokhara by six wickets. Janakpur also demonstrated their strength by defeating Kathmandu by eight wickets.
Karnali subsequently defeated Biratnagar by four wickets, while Biratnagar beat Sudurpaschim by 35 runs in a rain-affected match reduced to five overs. Janakpur defeated Pokhara by nine runs, while Kathmandu beat Karnali by four wickets. Sudurpaschim overcame Chitwan by five wickets, and Biratnagar secured a thrilling two-run victory over Janakpur.
Lumbini maintained their dominance by defeating Pokhara by eight wickets and Janakpur by 16 runs. Kathmandu's nine wicket victory over Biratnagar was another notable performance in the tournament.
In the more recent matches, Sudurpaschim defeated Karnali by 39 runs, while Chitwan beat Pokhara by 30 runs. Teams have demonstrated their strengths in both batting and bowling throughout the competition.
Individual performances have also attracted considerable attention. David Warner's batting, Jahandad Khan's impressive bowling, decisive contributions from Nepali players and the presence of international cricketers have added to the competitiveness of the NPL.
In particular, the performances of Nepali players under pressure have demonstrated the capabilities and potential of domestic cricket.
Another important feature of this edition is the introduction of the Decision Review System (DRS). The NPL has become the first tournament in Nepali cricket to use DRS, marking a step forward in the technical development of the competition.
The tournament has also gained recognition after its matches were included in the List A T20 structure under the recognition of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Cricket fans have also been actively sharing their views on social media. Kathmandu's third consecutive victory, Warner's batting and Jahandad's destructive bowling have drawn praise.
Meanwhile, Pokhara's continued defeats, the poor performances of batters from teams considered strong, and Lumbini's latest loss have generated discussion among supporters. Reactions posted on Facebook and X about match results and individual performances indicate sustained public interest in the tournament.
The attendance at matches, live broadcasts and discussions on social media during this edition of the NPL have also demonstrated the commercial potential of Nepali cricket.
However, as the tournament grows in popularity, attention will also need to be given to stadium infrastructure, crowd management, adherence to match schedules and arrangements for dealing with weather-related interruptions.
Following today's break, the tournament will resume on Monday. Pokhara Avengers will face Karnali Yaks at 12:30 pm, while Chitwan Rhinos will take on Kathmandu Gorkhas at 5 pm.
Kathmandu, having secured three consecutive victories, will look to maintain their momentum, while Pokhara will take the field in search of their first win.
With several league stage matches still remaining, it is too early to draw conclusions about any team's chances of winning the title. Lumbini, who currently lead the table, will look to make a comeback, while Kathmandu and Sudurpaschim will aim to maintain their form. The upcoming matches could also prove decisive for Chitwan, Janakpur, Karnali and Biratnagar.
Overall, the third edition of the NPL is showcasing the competitiveness of Nepali cricket, the appeal of international players and the potential of domestic talent. Matches resuming after today's break are expected to further shape the points table and provide a clearer picture of the title race.
