KATHMANDU, Oct 14: More than 2,500 electric vehicles (EVs) imported from China through the Korala Pass have been stranded in Mustang due to damage to the Beni-Jomsom road caused by floods, landslides and river erosion.
The vehicles entered Nepal over the past two weeks but have been unable to reach their destinations despite the road reopening on Friday evening, as sections of the route remain difficult to navigate.
Import of electric vehicles increased by 600 percent last year
According to the Armed Police Force’s Border Outpost at Nhechung, more than 2,000 EVs are parked in open areas and the Mustang Customs Yard. Another 500-plus vehicles that cleared customs at Korala and reached Jomsom remain parked at two locations.
Deepak Budhathoki, a representative of BYD, said more than 2,000 BYD vehicles of various models had been stranded in Mustang since heavy rainfall damaged the road.
Meanwhile, Police Inspector Santosh Basyal, the district police information officer, said more than 600 containers carrying goods imported through the Korala border had left the district for their destinations by Monday. Some empty containers have since headed towards Korala to transport additional goods.
