“The integration of the former Maoist combatants either in society or in the security agencies is vital to the peace process,” said Prime Minister Khanal, adding: “The Special Committee that has been formed for the purpose is working hard to complete this task and we hope to have the solutions well on time to complete peace process by May 28.”[break]
Addressing the inaugural session of two-day South Asia Peace Conference in Lalitpur, the prime minister said constitution drafting process has also been expedited lately. “At present, the constitutional committee and sub-committees are working hard and differing views are being reconciled and agreements have been reached on most of the contentious issues,” he said.
Stating that some major issues including state restructuring are being discussed, he expressed confidence that the parties would arrive at a consensus on the issues. “The Constituent Assembly will then prepare a final draft of the statute and put it before the people,” he said.
Prime Minister Khanal also pointed the need for all political parties to come together to successfully conclude both the constitution drafting and peace process. Stating that they have already witnessed two stages of transition after the success of people´s movement in 2006, the prime minister said, "The result of the election had mandated the parties to come together to complete the peace process and draft the new constitution. So in this third and final stage of transition, all political parties must come together to complete the peace process and give much needed stability to the country."
Let’s live in peace and embrace diversity
