PM vows to address private sector's demands

KATHMANDU, April 12: After drawing criticism from the private sector for the government's failure to create business doing environment in the country, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday said that the government was committed to support agendas and plans of the private sector.

Urging representative bodies of private sector to come forward with their agendas to create investment friendly environment in the country, Oli said that the government will address them accordingly."The government will fulfill all the demands of the private sector ranging from tax to labor issues," he said, adding: "But the agendas have to come through appropriate channel. Mere criticism is not going to work."

Oli also said that the government will do everything to establish industrial and business security and increase competitiveness of domestic products and services. He also said new programs will come through the budget for Fiscal Year 2016/17. "The new budget will not only address all woes of private sector, but will also focus on country's reconstruction and development activities."

Similarly, Minister for Industry Som Prasad Pandey said that the government's focus is on industrial development. "Industrial development is crucial to achieve economic prosperity," Pandey said, adding: "It is only through industrial development that we can meet our development aspirations."

Speaking at the program, NCC president Rajesh Kaji Shrestha said that the government should give high priority to agriculture, hydropower, tourism and infrastructural development. Stating that country's economic has become miserable after the earthquake and blockade, he urged the government to bring business-friendly policies and programs to revive our economy.

Welcoming the new trade agreements recently signed with Indian and China, Shrestha urged the government to focus on implementation of these agreements. He also underscored the need to reduce taxes on different products so that domestic products become competitive in the market.

On the occasion, Pashupati Murarka, president of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), said that professional unity among private sector and government support is needed to revive business sector.
