KATHMANDU, Oct 17: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandra Kuber Khapung has expressed sadness over the “unimaginable losses” the country faced from the Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9 and the subsequent unrest.

Speaking at a program organized to commemorate the 70th Police Day on Friday, IGP Khapung said that the Nepal Police has continued to stand as a strong representative of the state despite the losses it bears. He said that the police institution faces both the affection and anger of citizens in equal measure.

“In the current period of political transformation and the challenging days ahead, the Nepal Police remains professionally capable and committed to ensuring peace, security, and fair elections,” Khapung said. He further added, “a society without the Nepal Police cannot be imagined.”

IGP Khapung underscored the increasing demand for the expansion of police presence across the country. He said that the country now requires new police units in 939 locations and the upgrading of more than 400 existing offices.

He said that fulfilling these demands would require over 25,000 additional personnel.

Referring to the Gen Z protests, Khapung said that the country suffered unimaginable losses due to the protests of the youths and students of the Gen Z generation. “I pray for eternal peace for members of the Nepal Police and others who lost their lives during the protests.”

He also acknowledged the need for internal reform within the police institution. Khapung said, “It is necessary to improve our speech, words, and behavior. Abusive language or insults toward citizens, who pay for our uniforms with their taxes, will never be acceptable.”
