KATHMANDU, Aug 27: The death toll from the devastating flood that originated in Rasuwagadhi has reached 270, as search and recovery operations continue across several districts downstream of the Trishuli River.
According to the latest update from Nepal Police, 270 bodies have been recovered so far from flood-affected areas, while seven additional fatalities had been confirmed earlier, bringing the overall death toll to 277.
Of the bodies recovered, 17 were found in Rasuwa, 12 in Nuwakot, 27 in Dhading, 108 in Chitwan, 20 in Gorkha, nine in Tanahun, 62 in Nawalparasi East and 15 in Nawalparasi West.
Bhotekoshi flood: 28 police personnel missing
A total of 4,050 security personnel have been mobilized for search, rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.
The flood has also left dozens injured. Police said 66 people have received medical treatment, including 26 at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, 20 at the National Trauma Centre, two at Bir Hospital, one at Birendra Military Hospital, two at Norvic Hospital and one at Manmohan Hospital. Fourteen of the injured have already been discharged following treatment.
Meanwhile, 28 police personnel deployed in the disaster-hit areas remain out of contact.
At the Area Police Office in Timure, 13 of the 23 deployed personnel have been reached. Only one of the nine personnel stationed at the Rasuwagadhi Police Post has established contact. Likewise, five of the eight personnel at Syabrubesi Police Post, three of the eight at the Temporary Police Post in Mailung, nine of the 10 at Betrawati Police Post and five of the six at Haku Police Post have been accounted for.
Search and rescue teams continue to comb affected areas in an effort to locate the missing personnel and other individuals feared swept away by the flood. Authorities have cautioned that the casualty toll could rise further as operations reach remote and previously inaccessible locations.
The flood, one of the deadliest disasters to hit Nepal in recent years, has caused extensive damage along the Trishuli river corridor, washing away homes, bridges and critical infrastructure while severely disrupting transportation and communication networks across multiple districts.
