Rescue efforts intensify after Rasuwa flood; Cabinet meeting underway

KATHMANDU, August 26: The government has intensified search, rescue and relief operations after major flooding hit Syabrubesi, Timure and surrounding areas of Rasuwa on Wednesday morning, while a Cabinet meeting is underway in Kathmandu to assess the situation and decide on further measures.



District officials have been instructed to evacuate residents from vulnerable downstream areas to safer locations and alert communities that could be affected as the flood moves downstream.


The government has also urged people to avoid travelling along the Prithvi Highway, Galchi-Nuwakot-Rasuwa-Syabrubesi Road and Mugling-Narayangadh Road, which could be affected by the flooding.

Following Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s directives, the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepali Army and district disaster management authorities have intensified search, rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.


The Nepali Army has deployed two helicopters carrying medical teams for possible rescue and relief operations, while private helicopters are also being kept on standby.


A meeting of the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, chaired by Prime Minister Shah at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar, concluded at 11 am. Officials briefed the meeting on the damage caused by the flood and discussed measures for rescue and relief.


Shah directed concerned agencies to remain active in search, rescue and relief operations and ensure immediate assistance to affected residents. He also instructed authorities to strengthen precautionary measures in other disaster-prone areas.


Following the meeting, a Cabinet meeting convened by Shah is underway at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar. The agenda of the meeting has not been disclosed.
