SPORTS BRIEFS: Rambir Chess from Thursday

KATHMANDU, March 22: The Himalayan Chess Club has decided to organize Our Housing Cup Ram Bir Shrestha Memorial Second Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament from Thursday at Gabahal, Patan.



The six-day event will be played in the Swill League format for 10 rounds. [break]



The tournament will feature about 100 players, including 20 players from abroad -- India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, stated Herakaji Maharjan,the coordinator of the event. The top six players will bag a purse of Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 7,000, Rs 5,000 Rs 4,000 Rs 3,000 respectively while seventh to tenth players will be awarded with 1,5000 each.



Similarly, veteran above 50 years, U-15, U-19, best two local players, best players rated U-1750, best player among 1750 to 1850 rating will also be awarded with cash prizes. The expected cost of the tournament is Rs 210,000. Our Housing Company of Jawalakhel has sponsored Rs 60,000 for the event.



BBC, Dhuku win


KATHMANDU: BBC, Banepa and Dhuku Youth Club won their respective matches on Tuesday in the qualifiers of Martyrs Memorial C Division League Football held at the ANFA ground, Satdobato. Sansar Nanda Palanchowke netted twice as BBC defeated Nepal Roll Ball Club 2-0. Similarly, Dhuku Youth Club beat Gram Nirman Bandu Mandal 5-3 in a tiebreaker after the regulation time ended in a 1-1 tie. Earlier, Sandesh Lama had given Gram a first half lead while Ishwor Shrestha levelled the match during the second half.
