The first meeting of Competition Promotion and Market Protection Board, constituted last year as per the Competition Promotion and Market Protection Regulation, has decided to form a sub-committee led by under-secretary Matrika Marasini to roll out the strategic plan to ensure fair competition and smooth supplies of goods in the market.

The five-member committee also includes representatives from consumer rights groups.

The board, led by Purushottam Ojha, a secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies, comprises representatives from law ministry, industry ministry, finance ministry, department of commerce and other organizations representing private sector.

"The strategy will concentrate on the effective implementation of the Competition Promotion and Market Protection Act that envisages open competition among businesses and fair transaction of goods in the market free of syndicate, cartel and black marketeering," said Ganesh Dhakal, joint secretary at the MoCS.

According to him, the sub-committee will also make recommendations to the government on ways to end unfair practices in the market.

The government has appointed assistant chief district officers of major districts as market protection officers to ensure fairness in the market and protect consumer rights.
