KATHMANDU, March 24: Investigators have identified three other Indians involved in the Central Jail shooting incident, including one Mustak Ahamed Khan, who reportedly commanded all the groundwork in the capital for targeting media entrepreneur Yunus Ansari.

They spotted Khan through call detail analysis. Khan was believed to be loitering in the capital at least till March 12. [break]

“We misjudged certain points; otherwise he would have been arrested,” said one investigator. “We were a few hours late in raiding his quarters.”

Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) on Wednesday made public a probe report on the case, pointing out Khan as the central figure in the field.

MPCD said that it has corresponded with Interpol India for verifications in connection with the Indians identified so far.

Officials, meanwhile, are aware of the possibility that the new identifications could also come unstuck, as was the case with the perpetrator of the shooting, who was earlier identified as Jasjeet Singh but has finally been confirmed to be Manmeet Singh.

The other two Indians identified alongside Khan are Arvinda Kumar and Amar Singh. Information gathered so far on Amar Singh could also be crucial for investigations, given proper verification.

The MPCD report further says that both Khan and Kumar had also visited Charles Sobhraj at Central Jail to spy on Ansari´s movements there.

Nine Nepalis detained

Police also detained nine Nepalis with circumstantial links to Indian criminals. They include owners of motorcycle servicing centers and hotel staff. “They are currently in remand on public offence charges,” said officials.

Police officers called in

Nepal Police has asked Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Puskar KC, then in-charge at Central jail, to furnish clarifications over the incident. Similarly, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner´s Office (MPCO) has written to police headquarters to suspend Inspector Prabhakar Raj Sharma and Sub-inspector Birkha Bahadur Bisa.
