BARDIA, Aug 27: A wild elephant has been found dead near Babai canal on Thursday.

Officials at the Bardia National Park said the wild tusker might have been swept away in the flood while crossing the river.Ram Chandra Kandel, chief conservationist at the national park, said the cause of death can be ascertained only after post mortem examination.

Last year too, a male tusker had been electrocuted by electric fence in Neulapur. Locals had supplied high voltage electricity to prevent wild animals from destroying their paddy crop.

Similarly, an adult elephant had died some four years ago in Bhimmapur area of Rajapur. The elephant too was killed by the electric fence. The District Forest Office (DFO), Bardia had arrested two local farmers and filed a case against them for setting up the electric fence, which killed the wild elephant.

The National Park authorities estimate there are about 100 wild elephants in the Bardia National Park.
