KATHMANDU, Nov 23: A group of Nepali democracy advocates residing and working in the UK has called on the Nepali Congress (NC) leadership to hold the party’s general convention before the upcoming election of the House of Representatives (HoR).
In a statement released Saturday, the group acknowledged past shortcomings and urged the party to promise transformation, present new policies and programs, and engage with the people under renewed leadership.

“Having closely witnessed Nepal’s democratic movements and political transitions, we, the democracy-minded professionals based in the UK, call on Nepali Congress to hold its 15th general convention before the scheduled elections on March 5. Entering elections without embracing reforms and cleansing the party risks significant losses, threatens national unity, and could potentially drag the country into conflict,” the statement read.
The release further appealed to all forces committed to Nepal’s democratic constitution to unite for the nation’s supreme interest. It highlighted the Gen Z-led movement on September 8–9 demanding good governance and anti-corruption measures, noting that it sent a strong message for the party to introspect, correct its weaknesses and move forward.
“While communities inside and outside Nepal remain committed to the country’s future, major mainstream parties appear hesitant to embrace these changes. Nepali Congress, which has historically played a progressive role in every democratic movement since 1951, now seems defensive. We condemn attacks on Congress leaders’ homes, the central office, and other party properties,” the statement added.
The appeal was issued by prominent figures including former Free Student Union General Secretary Bishwo Adarsha Pandit, Dr. Sampurnanand Dhungana, Jay Nepal International Foundation UK Chairperson Gajen Kutuwal, Dr. Bachchu Kailash Kaini, Dr. Chandika Bhatt, E. Ram Raj Sharma, and Bijan Bhatt. They urged the party, historically led by leaders like BP Koirala, to promptly make decisions that can guide the country out of its current political uncertainty.
