KATHMANDU, July 20: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has stated that the monsoon is currently active across the country. The monsoon trough is situated north of its average position over western and central Nepal, and near the average position in the eastern region.
Due to this influence, partial to generally cloudy conditions prevail over the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali Provinces, while the rest of the country is experiencing partial cloud cover. Light to moderate rainfall is occurring at one or two places in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali Provinces.
Heavy rainfall forecast in Bagmati, several provinces
This afternoon, generally cloudy weather is expected across the country. There is a chance of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning at many places in the hilly areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali Provinces, and at a few places elsewhere. Some areas in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki Provinces, and other hilly regions may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Light to moderate snowfall is also likely in some parts of the high-hill and Himalayan regions.
Tonight, the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy across the country. Thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall are likely at many places in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim Provinces, and at a few places in the remaining provinces. A few places in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim Provinces may also receive heavy rainfall. Light to moderate snowfall is likely in some parts of the high-hill and Himalayan regions.
Due to the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces and the hilly regions, the department has advised the public to remain alert against risks of landslides, floods, and debris flow.
Heavy rainfall in Lumle
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged the public to exercise caution due to heavy rainfall in Lumle and surrounding areas of Kaski. Issuing a notice this morning, the department stated that heavy rainfall has occurred in Lumle and nearby areas, with the possibility of further rain, and has requested people to remain alert.
The department has warned that due to the likelihood of continued rainfall, there could be a sudden rise in water levels in small streams flowing through the area, and there is a risk of landslides in weak and steep terrains. It has called for increased vigilance in response.
Earlier, through a similar notice, the department had also advised caution in the Bhujung rainfall measurement area of Lamjung and its surroundings.
Likewise, the department issued another notice at 5:30 this morning, stating that the water level at the Kankai and Mainachuli hydrological stations in Ilam had crossed the alert threshold. As rainfall continues to intensify in the area, the department has drawn attention to the need for heightened caution in riverside settlements and low-lying areas prone to flooding, at least until this afternoon.
