I don’t think there’s anything likable about monsoon. It disrupts shooting, and it’s perturbing and messy while you’re travelling. Maybe I did like rain when I was young. Back in my village, I was assigned the job of carrying saplings for the rice plantation in this season and that used to be fun, but it’s different now. Recently I’ve been engaged in providing relief materials to the earthquake victims. The constant rain has been a big trouble while disseminating relief materials. It hasn’t done any good for the victims either. On a rainy day, I’d prefer staying dry at home and maybe watch some TV.

Following the scorching summer, I love how monsoon comes as a much needed respite and cools down the atmosphere. I don’t like getting wet in the rain, but when it’s raining, I’d like to sit back at home beside a big window pane with a cup of warm coffee and watch the rain unperturbed. My memory of rain as a young person is not a very good one though. I remember one day my mommy and I had been stuck in a stormy rain. We didn’t find any shelter for three hours and were soaked to the bone when we finally headed home. Perhaps that’s why getting wet in the rain doesn’t fancy me so much.

I’m from Nawalparasi and it was always a ‘wow’ moment when it rained there. My siblings and I loved to jump around in the balcony when it rained but I haven’t been able to do that in Kathmandu. These days, whenever I find myself at home when it’s raining, I seat myself next to the window to watch the world cleanse itself. A cup of coffee, some music in the background and I’m a happy girl. And I must be among the countless people who love the sound of rain on a tin roof.

Having been born and raised in hot Tarai, rain has always been a soothing retreat for me. I remember when I was young, while coming back from school I would throw away the umbrella my mom gave me and soak myself in the cold rain. Well, along with me, my books and copies would be wet, too, and that used to earn me a good beating from mom. I miss those days. This monsoon, even though it’s a busy one for me, I shall find some time to get wet under the heavy rain and then come back inside to have some hot mo:mos. I also enjoy going on long drives and watching the wet world pass by in speed.

This might sound strange to some but there are times when I don’t even realize it’s raining. I’m mostly working and so engrossed that I’m oblivious to the rain outside my home or office. I like to think that the monsoon is so soothing it just lulls me into a productive state of mind.

It had been a long time since I got wet in the rain but three days ago I went out and got drenched completely. I enjoyed the feel of the rain on me for a full 10 minutes and then ran inside and savored a cup of tea. I’m not usually a fan of getting wet, though. If I happen to be out when it rains, I stay put till it dies down or I wish to be home. And if I do happen to be at home, I snuggle in bed and watch films.
