GJM on January 25 had agreed with the central government to go for an interim arrangement for two years by forming a Gorkhaland Autonomous Authority.[break]
Stating that the Bengal government resorted to violence while staging a peaceful demonstration, GJM said it would not sit for talks regarding the interim arrangement.
“We want the political matter to be resolved through talks. However, the next round of talks will focus on formation of the Gorkhaland state,” said Roshan Giri, general secretary of GJM.
Hundreds of Nepali-speaking people have taken to streets after two GJM cadres were killed. Due to an indefinite strike called by GJM from Wednesday, transportation has come to a complete halt in Darjeeling and government offices and markets have also been closed.
GJM has called an indefinite strike demanding that the killing of its two cadres be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Although the Bengal government has asked the central government to mobilize army to rein in the situation, it has been learnt that the army has refused to act.
