SPORTS BRIEFS: Jawalakhel clinch bicycle polo title

KATHMANDU, May 16: Jawalakhel Youth Club clinched the title of the British Gurkhas Nepal Bicycle Polo Competition on Sunday. The home team defeated British Gurkhas Kathmandu 4-2 in the one-day competition held at Jawalakhel.



Suman Ranjitkar netted a brace while Hem Gurung and Suraj Thing scored one goal apiece for Jawalakhel. Jawalakhel came up with most of the A division players of their club as the league has been halted for some two weeks. Biru Thapa and Rajdeep Gurung scored one goal each for British Gurkhas. Altogether eight teams participated in the competition being organized annually by British Gurkhas from 2003. The teams were divided into two groups and the top two from each group got semifinal berths.



The competition was organized with the aim of collecting a sum of Rs 50,000, stated coordinator of the organizing committee Stevie Bye. The money raised from the competition would be handed over to the British Army Benevolent Fund and HOPAD, according to the organizers.





Khatri honored



KATHMANDU, May 16: Fupu Lamhu Khatri, bronze medalist of the Fourth Asian Youth Judo Championship held in Bangkok, was honored with a cash prize of Rs 5,000 on Sunday. Coach Hari Shrestha was also honored on the same occasion with Rs 3,000.



Khatri had won the medal in women´s U-63 category. Khatri has also become the second Nepali player to win medal in the tournament. Sunita Magar had won bronze in the second edition of the championship in 2008.



Nepal Judo Association President Deepak Harsha Bajracharya felicitated them at the Central Judo Training Center, Dasharath Stadium.



Meanwhile, judokas Rishiram Pradhan, Birendra Ranjit and Bir Bahadur Rana were also presented with fourth dan certificates. They are the first Nepalis to get fourth dan in judo.





Freedom, Pashupati in volleyball semis



KATHMANDU, May 16: Hosts Freedom Group and Pashupati Youth Club advanced into the semifinal on Sunday in the ongoing Lubhu Cup Open National Men´s Volleyball Tournament.



Freedom had a hard fought 23-25, 25-17, 25-19 win over Workers Martyrs Memorial Club and Pashupati eased past Chitrapur Youth Club 25-20, 25-23.





Angels´ Heart in basketball semis



KATHMANDU, May 16: Hosts Angels´ Heart cruised into the basketball semifinals in the senior girl´s section in the Valley-wide School-level Second Angels´ Heart Sports Festival on Sunday.



Angels defeated Excelsior 11-7 in the match held at the hosts´ court in Manamaiju. Iva Malla scored three points in Angels´ victory.



Gyan Niketan, Valley Public and AIA emerged winners in junior boys´ section.



Likewise, in senior boys´ volleyball, defending champions Newton defeated SEB 25-21, 25-18. In senior girls´ volleyball, Bijeshwari ousted SEB 9-25, 25-17, 25-18.
