KATHMANDU, June 11: Lawmakers have raised concerns in the House of Representatives over issues ranging from alleged house demolitions along the Mechi Highway and caste-based discrimination to infrastructure disruptions and financial irregularities.
Speaking during the emergency hour of Thursday’s HoR meeting, lawmaker Bhumika Subba urged the government not to demolish private houses built along the Mechi Highway, saying such actions could displace families and affect livelihoods.
Say No to Racial, Caste Discrimination
She said houses and businesses along the highway are at risk, especially with the monsoon season approaching. “With the monsoon approaching, people are worried about their houses being demolished. They fear losing their livelihoods. They are alarmed by notices from the Department of Roads. The decision to demolish private houses should be withdrawn,” she said.
Meanwhile, lawmaker Nita Ghatani raised concerns over discrimination against Dalits in Kathmandu, drawing attention to ongoing social injustices.
Similarly, lawmaker Gyanendra Shahi demanded an investigation into irregularities highlighted in the Auditor General’s report, calling for greater transparency and accountability in public financial management.
He reiterated the need for a thorough parliamentary probe into the reported irregularities.
In another intervention, lawmaker Yashoda Kumari Baral stressed the urgent need for maintenance of the Karnali Highway, saying landslides at several points have obstructed transportation and disrupted daily movement.
