DHM forecasts flash floods in small rivers for next three days

KATHMANDU, July 13: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has forecast flash floods in small rivers over the next three days due to heavy to very heavy rainfall.



According to the department, there is a risk of flooding in small rivers in Panchthar, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Saptari, Sunsari, Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Tanahun, Makawanpur, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Chitwan, Nawalparasi East, Nawalparasi West, Palpa, Kaski, Parbat, Myagdi, Syangja, Kailali and surrounding districts.


DHM hydrologist Binod Parajuli said Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavrepalanchok and nearby districts are at high risk of sudden flooding.

The department said moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in many places of the mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces this afternoon. Similar weather conditions are expected at a few places in the mountainous regions of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.


Likewise, moderate to heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning is likely at many places in the hilly and Tarai areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as in the hilly and Tarai regions of Madhesh, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces. Some places in the hilly and mountainous regions of Karnali Province may also experience similar weather.


Heavy rainfall is likely at a few places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, while one or two places in the Tarai regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, including Madhesh Province, may receive heavy rain.


Tonight, the weather will remain mostly cloudy in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, while Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces are expected to witness generally cloudy conditions.


Moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning has been forecast in many places of the mountainous regions of Koshi and Bagmati provinces, some places in the mountainous region of Gandaki Province, and a few places in the mountainous regions of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.


A few places in the hilly and Tarai areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Madhesh provinces are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall is expected at one or two places in the hilly and Tarai areas of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, while very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in the hilly and Tarai areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces.
