POKHARA, June 4: Three grenade bombs were found at a waste disposal site in Pokhara on Thursday after they were found in the garbage collected from various parts of the city.
The explosives were found at a dumping site in Pokhara-21, where waste from different areas of Pokhara is deposited.
According to local authorities, the grenades were discovered by Rima Sherpa while she was searching through the garbage for recyclable materials after a waste collection truck had unloaded its contents. Police were immediately informed and have since secured the area.
Waling Municipality: Making the best out of waste
Acting Ward Chairperson Bimala KC of Pokhara-21 said the explosives were found in garbage collected from areas including Ratopahiro and the vicinity of the International Mountain Museum.
The waste had been transported by a Pokhara Metropolitan City garbage truck before being unloaded at the disposal site.
KC said the grenades had been kept inside a sack, making them difficult to detect during collection and transportation. The explosives were only noticed after the sack was opened while sorting through the waste.
After discovering the objects, Sherpa reportedly examined them before an excavator operator working at the site advised her to put them down and informed authorities.
A police team from the Baidam Ward Police Office responded to the scene and notified the Nepal Army's bomb disposal unit.
Security personnel have cordoned off the area, and a bomb disposal team is working to safely defuse and remove the explosives. Authorities have yet to determine how the grenades ended up in the garbage.
