KATHMANDU, Jan 1: Nepali Congress (NC) Spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat has said that an individualistic mindset—where leaders believe “I alone am capable”—is increasingly prevailing within the party.
Speaking at Nagarik Frontline on Wednesday, Mahat criticised some senior leaders, including the general secretary, for centring party affairs around themselves rather than strengthening collective leadership.

He said it is wrong to promote a narrative that only one individual is capable of resolving the party’s problems. “The belief that a particular leader is exceptionally competent and that only they can provide solutions is incorrect. Individualistic tendencies do not make the party stronger. Instead of thinking about the party, people are focusing on themselves,” Mahat said.
On his role in the upcoming NC General Convention, Mahat said he is capable of and willing to assume leadership responsibilities. “I also have aspirations and can stake my claim in every way,” he said. “I have the ability to bridge the generational gap that is being discussed and to bring everyone together. We need to connect the new generation with the older one, and I can fulfil that role.”
Indicating that the NC is likely to contest the next general elections independently, without forming alliances, Mahat said, “Despite certain constraints created by the current situation, we believe that in the general elections we must compete on our own strength, as a single party.”
