KATHMANDU, Nov 30: CPN-UML Senior Vice-Chair Ishwar Pokharel has said that the party is opting for friendly and healthy competition.
In his video message addressed to all representatives of the party’s 11th General Convention on Sunday, Pokharel noted that the selection of delegates had been completed, with some chosen unanimously and others through internal contests.

The one-minute-twenty-seven-second message was aimed squarely at those heading into the landmark convention—where Pokharel himself has already announced his candidacy for party chair, positioning him as the key challenger to incumbent chair KP Sharma Oli.
“I am confident that you will play an important role in this General Convention,” Pokharel said, calling for further democratization within the party.
In the video, Pokharel emphasized strengthening democratic practices within the party and safeguarding the UML’s ideological foundation. “The CPN-UML seeks to advance the protection of people’s multiparty democracy and the democratization of party life in an effective manner,” he said. “Through this, we aim to push forward the national campaign for prosperity. I sincerely hope the 11th National Convention will reach meaningful conclusions on these goals.”
He also underscored the need for “friendly competition” in shaping the party’s future leadership—a remark widely interpreted as a nod to the upcoming chairmanship contest. “Along with this, we want to promote healthy and amicable competition in leadership-building,” Pokharel stated. “Let this convention be the platform where we achieve these goals.”
