KATHMANDU, Dec 20: Pushpa Kamal Dahal, coordinator of the Nepali Communist Party (erstwhile Maoist Party), has warned that his party will not remain silent if there is any attempt to postpone the scheduled House of Representatives (HoR) elections, vowing to take to the streets if necessary.
Addressing the Unity Message Rally at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu on Saturday, Dahal said the NCP has stood firmly in favour of elections since its announcement and has consistently appealed for timely polls through mass gatherings across the country. He cautioned the government against any attempt to defer the election dates under any pretext.

“Do not underestimate the massive public presence from Dhangadhi to Kathmandu. Do not dare to postpone the election date on any excuse or argument,” he said. He further said that postponing the election dates would be unconstitutional.
In a rather intimidating tone he recalled the party’s role in the armed conflict and the people’s movement that led to the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of the republic. “If this (NCP) force is provoked and the Constitution is once again undermined, it will come to the streets,” he said.
Dahal also threatened all ‘reactionaries’ not to push the country towards a crisis. He alleged that forces fearful of the NCP’s electoral prospects were attempting to disrupt the polls. “Some parties that once saw themselves as elephants are now afraid of becoming mice in the upcoming elections and are calling for polls to be deferred. That illusion must be shattered,” he said.
