POKHARA, May 28: The Pokhara Metropolitan City has begun demolishing unauthorized structures built on encroached government land in the Prithvi Chowk area of Ward No. 9.
The structures, located east of Hong Kong Bazaar, include buildings of Nepal Trade Union Congress, GEFONT Gandaki, Community Police, Sahara Club, Himali Cultural Family, and a public toilet, among others.
Two excavators were deployed amid a heavy presence of security personnel to remove the structures. According to officials, most organizations and business operators had already vacated the buildings following prior notice issued by the metropolis.

Mayor Dhanraj Acharya said the encroached structures are being cleared to construct a two-lane road, which is expected to ease traffic management in the Prithvi Chowk area.
The land belongs to the Pokhara Valley Urban Development Committee, where various organizations had built structures and were renting out commercial shutters.
Following a multiparty and multi-stakeholder discussion organized by the metropolis, affiliated organizations of political parties and other groups had agreed to vacate the buildings.
The metropolis and the Urban Development Committee had issued an eviction notice in early Baisakh, instructing the removal of encroachments. After the deadline expired, demolition work began on Thursday and has now intensified, officials said.
